I do not get paid to analysis restaurants

First I would like to say "thank you" for account your hometown paper, and a lot of chiefly for account my articles. You are not the aboriginal being to ask this question, and the acknowledgment is, "No, I do not get paid to analysis restaurants." I apperceive that the restaurant business is actual hard. There are a lot of continued hours and diaphoresis that are put in those hot kitchens. You accept never apprehend a bad analysis from me because I don't address them. This business is harder enough, and a bad analysis does no one any good. I apperceive abounding of you may disagree with me, and ambition to apperceive who is not authoritative the brand afore you appointment a restaurant. There are bounded and civic websites such as "YELP.com" that let dinners analysis restaurants and even leave pictures. I ambition to allotment with you my action of review. I never alarm afore I analysis a restaurant. I appearance up absolutely unannounced. That is why sometimes you see a account of the aliment and restaurant, and abounding times you don't. When I arrive, I accord the abode a acceptable attending around. I attending for all-embracing cleanliness, and afresh I ask for anyone in charge. I acquaint myself and I let them apperceive that I am there to analysis their establishment. I acquaint them that I will sit anywhere, and I would like to "taste" the menu. I don't eat abounding entrees because I ambition to aftertaste a little of everything, including any desserts. By this time, anybody usually knows that I am there and so they are on their best behavior. The chef, administrator or buyer will usually accost me. That's if I do a abrupt interview, and if things are traveling absolutely well, I will account a patron. Believe it or not, it does not consistently go that able-bodied but this is area I alter from a lot of critics. When I alien myself, I consistently acquaint the actual afraid host that I do not address bad reviews. Yes, you apprehend that right. I will not address a bad analysis if a restaurant does not accomplish the cut. I just don't address about them at all. I will about alarm back, or forward an email to the enactment and say that I will not be autograph about their enactment at this time and explain why, but that I will appear aback addition time and analysis the restaurant again. I am consistently greeted with the animadversion that reviewing restaurants is fun. It is but there's a lot of harder plan and albatross that go forth with the task. The readers are relying on me to be honest, and honestly, I am. All of our dining adventures are not consistently what we ambition they would be, even for me. Just endure weekend, I was just aggravating to accept cafeteria with a acquaintance out of boondocks at a abode that a bounded had suggested. It was not a acceptable experience. It got me to thinking, so I came up with some tips for dinning out and administration those difficult situations. -- Be ample and in charge. If you accept a ample affair (eight or more), accomplish anyone in allegation of the accumulation and alarm advanced as far in beforehand as possible. This helps the restaurant board you and your affair better. If anyone in your accumulation has any appropriate needs, you can be the "go to person." -- Use the name tags. Humans adulation audition their name. If your server has a name tag, or if he or she introduces themselves to you, address the name on a napkin and alarm the name often. It's a brainy thing. In a way, you are absolution them apperceive that you are alone captivation them amenable for how your meal is perceived. Believe me, a lot of servers don't ambition to let you down. -- Speak up, quickly. If you are not annoyed with your meal, anon acquaint the server and echo your antecedent appeal and your expectations. (i.e. "My steak is overcooked, I ordered it medium. Is it accessible for me to accept addition cut that has been adapted average which is hardly blush aloft rare"). -- Karma has neither acquaintance nor enemy. If you are not annoyed with your meal and or service, agilely let the server or administration know. Keep in apperception that absolute humans are confined you and while accountability may lay in the restaurant staff, accord the agents an befalling to "make it right."

Mary Richardson got the Kennedy husband and children she dreamed of, but it slowly fell apart

They always said of Mary Richardson that her dream was to marry a Kennedy. It was her own version of Camelot. She even resembled Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, with her stunning dark beauty, soft voice, and easy grace. The first Kennedy she met was Kerry, who was her roommate at Brown University. It didn’t take much time for Mary to catch the eye of Kerry’s older brother Bobby Kennedy Jr. — even though he was married to wife Emily Black at the time, with two children. He soon had his first marriage annulled, some say through Vatican connections, and Mary became Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. HOUSEKEEPER DISCOVERS MARY KENNEDY'S BODY From that point on, she became what she had always wanted to be: a wife and mother. From a family of five sisters herself, Mary Kennedy had four children with Bobby, and she devoted herself to her family. “She just lived for him,” said one close friend who asked not to be named. “And she lived for their children.” When her body was found on Wednesday, not one of those children had reached the age of 18. How could this happen? How could a mother so devoted to her kids end her life like this? Just days after Mother’s Day? Mary didn’t have a careerist bone in her body. She was active in fund-raising for environmental causes, and because her son has terrible food allergies, attempts to find a cure. She devoted herself to her family. But the marriage wasn’t as fairy-tale as she had hoped. Friends of Bobby’s say that she wanted him to run for office and felt his environmental activism wasn’t enough. She wanted to be the wife of a senator, or governor, at the least, they say. But with a 1983 heroin arrest on Kennedy’s record, that was not very likely. And Kennedy developed a rare voicebox disorder (spasmodic dysphonia) that made speechmaking difficult. Then there were the rumors. Periodically over the years, reporters have called Kennedy about this Broadway musical star, or that alluring wealthy environmentalist. We tried not to judge someone who lost his father so brutally and publicly at the age of 14. But Mary had to hear the same rumors. Kennedy took adventure travel trips to distant places a lot, often without her. “I remember talking with Mary at one of the NRDC benefits before they separated,” said another friend. “She said that Bobby had taken her along on one of his trips to South America, and she was glowing. Despite all the heartache and the fighting and the ugliness, she still loved him.” Many of the reports of her death mention her two arrests for DUI. She shouldn’t be remembered for that. If the rumors were true, it would drive anybody to drink. Certainly since the split in 2010, Mary must have read that Bobby was now dating “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star Cheryl Hines. Still pretty, Mary dated no one, and perhaps kept up hopes for a reconciliation. In recent months, family and friends have been worried that Mary was becoming so “fragile.” It got worse after Bobby began telling friends that he had taken custody of the kids. OPINION: DON'T BLAME KENNEDY CURSES FOR MARY KENNEDY'S DEATH Mary’s four sisters hoped to bring her to Tuscany this summer for a healing trip. She was still dwelling on Bobby. “The divorce was torturous for her. But after they split, Mary said they were actually getting along better, that he’d come over to the house and they would have a good time,” said another friend. “But I think she was just putting on a brave face.”

It has long been rumored that Stewart, 22, boyfriend Pattinson, 26, are on the brink of tying the knot, but aside from referring to Pattinson as her "f—ing boyfriend," Stewart remains mum. "Laurence Olivier was asked, 'Actors, what's the impulse? Why?' And he was like, 'Look at me, look at me, look at me ...' That was his answer," the actress told the magazine. "But at the same time, it's like, 'Nooo, don't look at me. Look at some version that I'm going to present to you. Let me control it.'" The young actress, who will be seen next in "Snow White and the Huntsman" opposite Charlize Theron, says her separation of professional and personal life is deliberate.

Life touched

A sad thing in life is when you meet someone who means a lot to you, only to find out in the end that it was never meant to be and you just have to let go. The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had. It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives. short prom dresses 2012 It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone,an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone- but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Don't go for looks;they can deceive. Don't go for wealth;even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Dream what you want to dream;go where you want to go;be what you want to be,because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. Always put yourself in the other's shoes. If you feel that it hurts you,it probably hurts the person too. A careless word may kindle strife;a cruel word may wreck a life;a timely word may level stress;a loving word may heal and bless. plus size prom dresses The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, ends with a tear. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one smiling and everyone around you is crying.

What is love

Love is no ordinary thing. It is not voluntary, but when it begins, you will know. prom dresses 2012 There are three types of love. Infatuation, love of family, and love of your spouse. Infatuation, most commonly known as “Puppy Love”, is basically love at first sight. Infatuation can be the beginning of a future spouse love. Though most often infatuation doesn’t amount to much. Love of family is loving your mother and father, and any siblings you may have. You want to protect them, watch over them, and fill their lives with an unbounding joy. The parents have an innermost feeling for their children, which in my case, they express everyday. Love of your spouse means loving someone you are married to. Whether husband or wife, you support your spouse with a deep modesty, and you treat them with great respect. Being possibly the most trivial question of all time, this is one hard question to ask. prom dresses on sale Love means to care, to protect, to watch over, to pray for, to make sure the loved person is happy. But to tell you the truth, those are all parts of love. Not love itself. So, I will tell you what I think of love. Love has a meaning, but we will never know. Many philosophers have tried, but all their attempts have failed. Every single one of them! Love is not a bond, or a relationship, but more of a heart to heart conversation. When the conversation grows, the bond and relationship forms. Therefore, love creates the bond and relationship. Still, that leaves us with the main question, what is love? Okay, so I told you the three types of love. But I still haven’t told you what love is. I told you a definition, a heart to heart conversation, but does that tell you much? No. So, I will put it straight.

To break bad habits

A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes almost an involuntary response. If we consider this habit to be undesirable then we may label it a "bad habit". People spend countless hours and dollars each year attempting to break these bad habits and often do not have any success. Why? Because there is no magic bullet. Change is hard work and there is no short cut to achieving it. The steps a person needs to take, however, can be very simply outlined. To effect a change in habits, one needs to bring the action back into the realm of consciousness and regain the ability to make choices. What's the payoff blue prom dresses The first step in breaking a bad habit is to look at why you find this action so compelling. In other words, what's the payoff for doing this seemingly negative thing? Since you've already classified this as a "bad" habit you may be tempted to say there isn't one. But look closer. There is always a payoff. Let's say your bad habit is yelling at your kids. What's in it for you? You let off some steam and feel a little better for the moment. Or you have a bad habit of leaving the dishes unwashed? The payoff could be that you get to spend more time on the Internet! plus size evening dresses

A rainy day

This morning,i woke up with a start: my clock was alarming. unwillingly opened my eyes, i found it was 6:30 already.nevertheless, the room was very gloomy, for it was raining outside. what a cold day! how comfortable it would be if i could stay in bed for the whole day, reading a favourite book in the sound of rain. but, i did have to go to work. black prom dresses Though it was a rush hour, on the way, there were fewer people than usual. many people arduously held an umbrella which was always blown down by a blast of wind.fortunately , i was dressed in a raincoat. several yards away, a policeman was guiding the traffic in the rain. i was filled with deep esteem for his seriousness.i kept thinking of today's plan for a short while and, then,i was in my office. a busy day is beginning …… yellow prom dresses

I am nature's greatest miracle 2

I am nature's greatest miracle. I am not on this earth by chance. I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth will I apply all my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy. I will increase my knowledge of mankind, myself, and the goods I sell, thus my sales will multiply. I will practice, and improve, and polish the words I utter to sell my goods, for this is the foundation on which I will build my career and never will I forget that many have attained great wealth and success with only one sales talk, delivered with excellence. Also will I seek constantly to improve my manners and graces, for they are the sugar to which all are attracted. I am nature's greatest miracle. I will concentrate my energy on the challenge of the moment and my actions will help me forget all else. The problems of my home will be left in my home. I will think naught of my family when I am in the market place for this will cloud my thoughts. So too will the problems of the market place be left in the market place and I will think naught of my profession when I am in my home for this will dampen my love. black prom dresses There is no room in the market place for my family, nor is there room in my home for the market. Each I will divorce from the other and thus will I remain wedded to both. Separate must they remain or my career will die. This is a paradox of the ages. I am nature's greatest miracle. I have been given eyes to see and a mind to think and now I know a great secret of life for I perceive, at last, that all my problems, discouragements, and heartaches are, in truth, great opportunities in disguise. I will no longer be fooled by the garments they wear for mine eyes are open. I will look beyond the cloth and I will not be deceived. I am nature's greatest miracle. No beast, no plant, no wind, no rain, no rock, no lake had the same beginning as I, for I was conceived in love and brought forth with a purpose. In the past I have not considered this fact but it will henceforth shape and guide my life. yellow prom dresses I am nature's greatest miracle. And nature knows not defeat. Eventually, she emerges victorious and so will I, and with each victory the next struggle becomes less difficult. I will win, and I will become a great salesman, for I am unique. I am nature's greatest miracle.

I am nature's greatest miracle 1

I am nature's greatest miracle. Since the beginning of time never has there been another with my mind, my heart, my eyes, my ears, my hands, my hair, my mouth. None that came before, none that live today, and none that come tomorrow can walk and talk and move and think exactly like me. All men are my brothers yet I am different from each. I am a unique creature. I am nature's greatest miracle. white prom dresses Although I am of the animal kingdom, animal rewards alone will not satisfy me. Within me burns a flame, which has been passed from generations uncounted and its heat is a constant irritation to my spirit to become better than I am, and I will. I will fan this flame of dissatisfaction and proclaim my uniqueness to the world. None can duplicate my brush strokes, none can make my chisel marks, none can duplicate my handwriting, none can produce my child, and, in truth, none has the ability to sell exactly as I. Henceforth, I will capitalize on this difference for it is an asset to be promoted to the fullest. I am nature's greatest miracle. Vain attempts to imitate others no longer will I make. Instead will I place my uniqueness on display in the market place. I will proclaim it, yea, I will sell it. I will begin now to accent my differences; hide my similarities. So too will I apply this principle to the goods I sell. Salesman and goods, different from all others, and proud of the difference. I am a unique creature of nature. pink prom dresses I am rare, and there is value in all rarity; therefore, I am valuable. I am the end product of thousands of years of evolution; therefore, I am better equipped in both mind and body than all the emperors and wise men who preceded me. But my skills, my mind, my heart, and my body will stagnate , rot, and die lest I put them to good use. I have unlimited potential. Only a small portion of my brain do I employ; only a paltry amount of my muscles do I flex. A hundredfold or more can I increase my accomplishments of yesterday and this I will do, beginning today. Nevermore will I be satisfied with yesterday's accomplishments nor will I indulge, anymore, in self-praise for deeds which in reality are too small to even acknowledge. I can accomplish far more than I have, and I will, for why should the miracle which produced me end with my birth? Why can I not extend that miracle to my deeds of today

Made in China(二)

When they are not testing TV remotes, middle-class Chinese are squinting at the labels of the foods they feed their children. Quality has become an obsession since the tainted milk crisis of 2008, which sickened hundreds of thousands of infants. Not surprisingly, consumers were annoyed when Walmart was recently accused of labelling common-or-garden pork as organic. They expect that kind of thing from domestic companies but not from foreign multinationals. Now that China is getting into the habit of exercising the basic human right to buy non-toxic foods, it is a short step to demanding shoes that do not fall apart in the first week and home appliances that last at least until the next house renovation. Tesco, the UK retailer, says the Chinese middle class is "becoming increasingly sophisticated in the quality of products they purchase", including buying more foreign and high-end brands, not just safer food. purple prom dresses Everyone is jumping on the safety bandwagon. Malls and real estate developers are trying to brand themselves as safe by asking impartial international quality inspection companies to verify that their lifts will not plunge or their walls fall down on shoppers. "From fruit to paint, Chinese are willing to pay for something with a safety seal," says Shaun Rein, author of The End of Cheap China. That may sound like good news for multinational brands, because they — rightly or wrongly — are perceived as having the edge on quality. white prom dresses But there is no room for complacency. Chinese consumers are no longer willing to spend blindly on anything foreign for the sake of it. The Chinese shopper has come of age, not just in the world's premier shopping destinations but in the malls and high streets back home. "Made in China" will never be the same again.

Made in China

There are two kinds of "made in China": made in China for export, and made in China to be palmed off on hapless consumers at home. For years the gap in quality has been wide. Chinese consumers received the worst that "made in China" had to offer; all the good stuff ended up at Walmart. prom dresses under 100 But now Chinese consumers are what it's all about. Beijing wants an economy driven by domestic consumption, so pleasing buyers at home has taken on a priority. About time. As the balance of consumer power shifts back to the motherland, Chinese consumers have responded by turning into some of the world's most demanding shoppers. Everyone from grocers to handbag makers, mall developers to paint mixers, say Chinese consumers are ready and able to pay for world-class goods. Domestic and western retailers can no longer get away with giving them second best. China even seems to be losing its appetite for fakes. Counterfeit luxury goods, a hit with the girls in the Shanghai typing pool, are losing out to the real thing. Chinese shoppers still like an extra dose of bling on everything, but as salaries and sophistication rise, they prefer their glitz genuine rather than fake. Escada, the women's designer clothing group, has conducted a survey that found a steep drop in Chinese consumer willingness to buy fakes, from 31 per cent in 2008 to 12 per cent by 2010. Fakes were fine when all the Chinese wanted was a logo to flash around. But the country's middle class is learning that there is more to life than showing off. No one should expect China's counterfeit markets to disappear. But Max Magni, head of McKinsey's Chinese consumer goods practice in Shanghai, says the market for luxury fakes is growing much more slowly than the real thing, and Chinese consumers are getting harder to please. cheap prom dresses 2012 This plays out in all sorts of markets. Until two or three years ago, Chinese people shopping for a television looked for clarity of sound and picture, and other basic attributes, he says. But now, the average Chinese consumer will not stop there. They will insist on pressing every button on the remote to make sure it does what they want it to do, and testing the screen to make sure it is non-glare. "A lot of people in Europe wouldn't even care about that," says Mr Magni. He sees that attitude not just in rich cities like Shanghai but in many that most of us have never heard of.

The Scars of Love

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided togo for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water,he ran out the back door, leavingbehind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went. He flew into the water, notrealizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake,an alligator wasswimming toward the shore. His mother - in the house was looking out thewindow - saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utterfear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a return to swimto his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her,the alligatorreached him. blue prom dresses From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as thealligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war betweenthe two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the motherwas much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard herscreams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator. Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal and, on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved. The newspaper reporter who interviewed the boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter. But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mom wouldn't let go. prom dresses 2012 You and I can identify with that little boy. We have scars, too. No, not from an alligator, or anything quite so dramatic. But, the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friend, are because God has refused to let go. In the midst of your struggle, He's been there holding on to you.

ice Of A Miracle

ss was a precocious eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money. They were moving to an apartment complex next month because Daddy didn’t have the money for the doctor’s bills and our house. Only a very costly surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was no-one to loan them the money. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.” Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes. Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall’s Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages, “he said without waiting for a reply to his question.” “Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.” short prom dresses 2012 “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.” “How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. plus size prom dresses “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered barely audibly. “And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.” “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents — the exact price of a miracle for little brothers. “He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.” That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home again and doing well. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place. “That surgery,” her Mom whispered, “was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?” Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.

Settle for

I recently turned fifty, which is young for a tree, midlife for an elephant , and ancient for a sportsman, Fifty is a nice number for the states in the US or for a national speed limit but it is not a number that I was prepared to have hung on me. Fifty is supposed to be my father's age. but now I am stuck with this number and everything it means. A few days ago, a friend tried to cheer me up by saying, " Fifty is what forty used to be . "He had made an inspirational point, Am I over the hill People keep telling me that the hill has been moved, and I keep telling them that he high-jump bar has dropped from the six feet I once easily cleared to the four feet that is impossible for me now. " Your are not getting older, you are getting better . " says Dr. Joyce Brothers . This, however, is the kind of doctor who inspires a second opinion. black prom dresses And so. as I approach the day when I cannot even jump over the tennis net. I am moves to share some thoughts on aging with you. I am moved to show how aging feels to me physically and mentally. Getting older. of course, is obviously a better change than the one that brings you eulogies. In fact , a poet named Robert Browning considered it the best change of all : Grow old along with me! The best is yet to me. yellow prom dresses Whether or not Browning was right , most of my first fifty years have been golden ones, so I will settle for what is ahead being as good as what has gone by. I find myself moving toward what is ahead with a curious blend of both fighting and accepting my aging, hoping that the philosopher was right when he said . "Old is always fifteen years from now. "

Lion

Lying in the sun on a rock, the cougar saw Jeb and his son, Tom, before they saw it. Jeb put his bag down quickly and pulled his jacket open with both hands, making himself look big to the cougar. It worked. The cougar hesitated, ready to attack Jeb, but ready to forget the whole thing, too. Jeb let go of his jacket, grasped Tom and held him across his body, making a cross. Now the cougar's enemy looked even bigger, and it rose up, ready to move away, but unfortunately Tom got scared and struggled free of Jeb. "Tom, no!" shouted his father. But Tom broke and ran and that's the last thing you do with a cougar. The second Tom broke free, Jeb threw himself on the cougar, just as it jumped from the rock. They hit each other in mid-air and both fell. The cougar was on Jeb in a flash, forgetting about Tom, which was what Jeb wanted. white prom dresses Cougars are not as big as most people think and a determined man stands a chance, even with just his fists. As the cougar's claws got into his left shoulder, Jeb swung his fist at its eyes and hit, hard. The animal howled and put its head back. Jeb followed up with his other fist. Then out of the comer of his eye, Jeb saw Tom. The boy was running back to help his father. "Knife, Tom," shouted Jeb. The boy ran to his father's bag, while Jeb started shouting as well as hitting, to keep the cougar's attention away from Tom. Tom got the knife and ran over to Jeb. The cougar was moving its head in and out, trying to find a way through the wall Jeb was making out of his arms. Tom swung with the knife, into the cougar's back. It howled horribly and ran off into the mountains. The whole fight had taken about thirty seconds. pink prom dresses

Cotton Mather

I came away from my years of teaching on the college and university level with a conviction that enactment, performance, dramatization are the most successful forms of teaching. Students must be incorporated, made, so far as possible, an integral part of the learning process. The notion that learning should have in it an element of inspired play would seem to the greater part of the academic establishment merely silly, but that is nonetheless the case. Of Ezekiel Cheever, the most famous schoolmaster of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, his onetime student Cotton Mather wrote that he so planned his lessons that his pupils “came to work as though they came to play,” and Alfred North Whitehead, almost three hundred years later, noted that a teacher should make his/her students “glad they were there.” yellow prom dresses
Since, we are told, 80 to 90 percent of all instruction in the typical university is by the lecture method, we should give close attention to this form of education. There is, I think, much truth in Patricia Nelson Limerick’s observation that “lecturing is an unnatural act, an act for which God did not design humans. It is perfectly all right, now and then, for a human to be possessed by the urge to speak, and to speak while others remain silent. But to do this regularly, one hour and 15 minutes at a time... for one person to drag on while others sit in silence?... I do not believe that this is what the Creator... designed humans to do.”
The strange, almost incomprehensible fact is that many professors, just as they feel obliged to write dully, believe that they should lecture dully. To show enthusiasm is to risk appearing unscientific, unobjective; it is to appeal to the students’ emotions rather than their intellect. Thus the ideal lecture is one filled with facts and read in an unchanged monotone.
The cult of lecturing dully, like the cult of writing dully, goes back, of course, some years. Edward Shils, professor of sociology, recalls the professors he encountered at the University of Pennsylvania in his youth. They seemed “a priesthood, rather uneven in their merits but uniform in their bearing; they never referred to anything personal. Some read from old lecture notes and then haltingly explained the thumb-worn last lines. Others lectured from cards that had served for years, to judge by the worn edges... The teachers began on time, ended on time, and left the room without saying a word more to their students, very seldom being detained by questioners... The classes were not large, yet there was no discussion. No questions were raised in class, and there were no office hours.” blue prom dresses

Amazingly

In the villages of the English countryside there are still people who remember the good old days when no one bothered to lock their doors. There simply wasn’t any crime to worry about.
Amazingly, these happy times appear still to be with us in the world’s biggest community. A new study by Dan Farmer, a gifted programmer, using an automated investigative program of his own called SATAN, shows that the owners of well over half of all World Wide Web sites have set up home without fitting locks to their doors. pink prom dresses
SATAN can try out a variety of well-known hacking tricks on an Internet site without actually breaking in. Farmer has made the program publicly available, amid much criticism. A person with evil intent could use it to hunt down sites that are easy to burgle.
But Farmer is very concerned about the need to alert the public to poor security and, so far, events have proved him right. SATAN has done more to alert people to the risks than cause new disorder. So is the Net becoming more secure? Far from it. In the early days, when you visited a Web site your browser simply looked at the content. Now the Web is full of tiny programs that automatically download when you look at a Web page, and run on your own machine. These programs could, if their authors wished, do all kinds of nasty things to your computer.
At the same time, the Net is increasingly populated with spiders, worms, agents and other types of automated beasts designed to penetrate the sites and seek out and classify information. All these make wonderful tools for antisocial people who want to invade weak sites and cause damage.
But let’s look on the bright side. Given the lack of locks, the Internet is surely the world’s biggest (almost) crime-free society. Maybe that is because hackers are fundamentally honest. Or that there currently isn’t much to steal. Or because vandalism isn’t much fun unless you have a peculiar dislike for someone. black prom dresses
Whatever the reason, let’s enjoy it while we can. But expect it all to change, and security to become the number one issue, when the most influential inhabitants of the Net are selling services they want to be paid for.

Americans

Early in the age of affluence that followed World War II, an American retailing analyst named Victor Lebow proclaimed, “Our enormously productive economy... We need things consumed, burned up, worn out, replaced and discarded at an ever increasing rate.”
Americans have responded to Lebow’s call, and much of the world has followed.
Consumption has become a central pillar of life in industrial lands and is even embedded in social values. Opinion surveys in the world’s two largest economies—Japan and the United States—show consumerist definitions of success becoming ever prevalent.
Overconsumption by the world’s fortunate is an environmental problem unmatched in severity by anything but perhaps population growth. Their surging exploitation of resources threatens to exhaust or unalterably spoil forests, soils, water, air and climate.
Ironically, high consumption may be a mixed blessing in human terms, too. The time-honored values of integrity of character, good work, friendship, family and community have often been sacrificed in the rush to riches. purple prom dresses
Thus many in the industrial lands have a sense that their world of plenty is somehow hollow—that, misled by a consumerist culture, they have been fruitlessly attempting to satisfy what are essentially social, psychological and spiritual needs with material things.
Of course, the opposite of over-consumption—poverty—is no solution to either environmental or human problems. It is infinitely worse for people and bad for the natural world too. Dispossessed peasants slash-and-burn their way into the rain forests of Latin America, and hungry nomads turn their herds out onto fragile African grassland, reducing it to desert.
If environmental destruction results when people have either too little or too much, we are left to wonder how much is enough. What level of consumption can the earth support? When does having more cease to add noticeably to human satisfaction? white prom dresses

Psychologist Michael

Every fall, like clockwork, Linda Krentz of Beaverton, Oregon, felt her brain go on strike. “I just couldn’t get going in the morning,” she says. “I’d get depressed and gain 10 pounds every winter and lose them again in the spring.” Then she read about seasonal affective disorder, a form of depression that occurs in fall and winter, and she saw the light-literally. Every morning now she turns on a specially constructed light box for half an hour and sits in front of it to trick her brain into thinking it’s still enjoying those long summer days. It seems to work. yellow prom dresses
Krentz is not alone. Scientists estimate that 10 million Americans suffer from seasonal depression and 25 million more develop milder versions. But there’s never been definitive proof that treatment with very bright lights makes a difference. After all, it’s hard to do a double-blind test when the subjects can see for themselves whether or not the light is on. That’s why nobody has ever separated the real effects of light therapy from placebo effects.
Until now. In three separate studies published last month, researchers report not only that light therapy works better than a placebo but that treatment is usually more effective in the early morning than in the evening. In two of the groups, the placebo problem was resolved by telling patients they were comparing light boxes to a new anti-depressant device that emits negatively charged ions. The third used the timing of light therapy as the control.
Why does light therapy work? No one really knows. “Our research suggests it has something to do with shifting the body’s internal clock,” says psychiatrist Dr. Lewey. The body is programmed to start the day with sunrise, he explains, and this gets later as the days get shorter. But why such subtle shifts make some people depressed and not others is a mystery.
That hasn’t stopped thousands of winter depressives from trying to heal themselves. Light boxes for that purpose are available without a doctor’s prescription. That bothers psychologist Michael Terman of Columbia University. He is worried that the boxes may be tried by patients who suffer from mental illness that can’t be treated with light. Terman has developed a questionnaire to help determine whether expert care is needed. blue prom dresses
In any event, you should choose a reputable manufacturer. Whatever product you use should emit only visible light, because ultraviolet light damages the eyes. If you are photosensitive, you may develop a rash. Otherwise, the main drawback is having to sit in front of the light for 30 to 60 minutes in the morning. That’s an inconvenience many winter depressives can live with.

Call on an Expert

Little Johnny was playing with his father's wallet when he accidently swallowed a quarter. He went crying to him mum, choking on the quarter. pink prom dresses They took him to a doctor, who said that the quarter was impossible to remove without surgery, they consulted a specialist who was of the same opinion. Then came a man who said he could get the money out in a jiffy. He turned little Johnny upside down and patted him with great precision on the back of neck and, sure enough, the quarter rolled out. Everyone was amazed, the father said “You must be an expert!” The man replied, “No sir I'm just a tax collector.”black prom dresses

The Rain

A small boy and his father were having a walk in the country when it suddenly began to rain very hard. They did not have their umbrella with them, and there was nowhere to hide from the rain, so they were soon very wet, and the small boy did not feel very happy.
For a long time while they were walking home through the rain, the boy was thinking. Then at last he turned to his father and said to him,“Why does it rain, Father? It isn't very nice, is it?”white prom dresses
“No, it isn't very nice, but it's very useful,Tom,”answered his father.“It rains to make the fruit and the vegetables grow for us, and to make the grass grow for the cows and sheep.”
Tom thought about this for a few seconds, and then he said,“Then, why does it rain on the road too, Father?”purple prom dresses

Through several rounds of upgrades

Internet information giant Google updated ocean data in its Google Earth application this week, reflecting new bathymetry data assembled by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, NOAA researchers and many other ocean mapping groups from around the world. The newest version of Google Earth includes more accurate imagery in several key areas of ocean using data collected by research cruises over the past three years. yellow prom dresses

"The original version of Google Ocean was a newly developed prototype map that had high resolution but also contained thousands of blunders related to the original archived ship data," said David Sandwell, a Scripps geophysicist. "UCSD undergraduate students spent the past three years identifying and correcting the blunders as well as adding all the multibeam echosounder data archived at the National Geophysical Data Center in Boulder, Colorado."

"The Google map now matches the map used in the research community, which makes the Google Earth program much more useful as a tool for planning cruises to uncharted areas," Sandwell added.

For example, the updated, more precise data corrects a grid-like artifact on the seafloor that was misinterpreted in the popular press as evidence of the lost city of Atlantis off the coast of North Africa. blue prom dresses

Through several rounds of upgrades, Google Earth now has 15 percent of the seafloor image derived from shipboard soundings at 1-kilometer resolution. Previous versions only derived about 10 percent of their data from ship soundings and the rest from depths predicted by Sandwell and NOAA researcher Walter Smith using satellite gravity measurements. The two developed the prediction technique in 1994. The satellite and sounding data are combined with land topography from the NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission to create a global topography and bathymetry grid called SRTM30_PLUS.

This new version includes all of the multibeam bathymetry data collected by U.S. research vessels over the past three decades including 287 Scripps expeditions from research vessels Washington, Melville and Revelle. UCSD undergraduate student Alexis Shakas processed all the U.S. multibeam data and then worked with Google researchers on the global integration.

The next major upgrade to the grid will occur later this year using a new gravity model having twice the accuracy of previous models. The new gravity information is being collected by a European Space Agency satellite called CryoSat that was launched in February 2010.

Have a good time

Caffeine consumption has long been associated with decreased risk of liver disease and reduced fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease. Now, newly published research confirms that coffee caffeine consumption reduces the risk of advanced fibrosis in those with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Findings published in the February issue of Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, show that increased coffee intake, specifically among patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), decreases risk of hepatic fibrosis. The steady increase in rates of diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome over the past 20 years has given rise to greater prevalence of NAFLD. In fact, experts now believe NAFLD is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in the U.S., surpassing both hepatitis B and C. The majority of patients will have isolated fatty liver which has a very low likelihood of developing progressive liver disease. However, a subset of patients will have NASH, which is characterized by inflammation of the liver, destruction of liver cells, and possibly scarring of the liver. Progression to cirrhosis (advanced scarring of the liver) may occur in about 10-11% of NASH patients over a 15 year period, although this is highly variable. white prom dresses

To enhance understanding of the correlation between coffee consumption and the prevalence and severity of NAFLD, a team led by Dr. Stephen Harrison, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas surveyed participants from a previous NAFLD study as well as NASH patients treated at the center's hepatology clinic. The 306 participants were asked about caffeine coffee consumption and categorized into four groups: patients with no sign of fibrosis on ultrasound (control), steatosis, NASH stage 0-1, and NASH stage 2-4. pink prom dresses

Researchers found that the average milligrams in total caffeine consumption per day in the control, steatosis, Nash 0-1, and Nash 2-4 groups was 307, 229, 351 and 252; average milligrams of coffee intake per day was 228, 160, 255, and 152, respectively. There was a significant difference in caffeine consumption between patients in the steatosis group compared to those with NASH stage 0-1. Coffee consumption was significantly greater for patients with NASH stage 0-1, with 58% of caffeine intake from regular coffee, than with NASH stage 2-4 patients at only 36% of caffeine consumption from regular coffee.

Multiple analyses showed a negative correlation between coffee consumption and risk of hepatic fibrosis. "Our study is the first to demonstrate a histopatholgic relationship between fatty liver disease and estimated coffee intake," concludes Dr. Harrison. "Patients with NASH may benefit from moderate coffee consumption that decreases risk of advanced fibrosis. Further prospective research should examine the amount of coffee intake on clinical outcomes." black prom dresses
